Extremadura is synonymous with adventure. With its diverse geography and deep-rooted traditions, this region is a must-visit for anyone eager to sample local beverages. From robust wines to fragrant liqueurs, Extremadura's alcoholic beverages reflect the area's character.

The lure of Extremadura’s wines

Wine enthusiasts will find a piece of paradise in Extremadura. The region boasts is famous for several grape varieties.

If you're looking for vino tinto...

Among these, Tempranillo stands out. Known for its bold flavors and aromas of cherry and plum, Tempranillo wines are perfect for those who appreciate depth. Many local producers craft their wines using traditional methods - resulting in wines that resonate with the essence of Extremaduran terroir.

If you're looking for vino blanco...

Extremadura is increasingly gaining recognition for its white wines, particularly La Serena (named from the comarca east of Badajoz). With a fresh and fruity profile, La Serena offers crisp notes of green apple and citrus. This white wine is an excellent accompaniment to regional dishes such as torta del Casar, the rich and creamy local cheese.

Traditional liqueurs

Look out for licor de hierbas (herb liqueur), featuring a blend of natural herbs and spices sourced from the Extremaduran hills and valleys. Each producer has its unique recipe, creating a delightful surprise with every taste. Thyme, rosemary, and mint are common ingredients, offering a complex burst of flavours that reflect the region's landscapes.

Another must-try is the fiery aguardiente, a local spirit usually flavoured with anise. During festivals, you might find it served as a refreshing palate cleanser...or as a 'slammer'!

Craft beers

While wines and liqueurs often steal the spotlight, local beers deserve attention as well. Extremadura has seen a rise in small-scale breweries committed to craftsmanship. For example, Cerveza Ballut Cerveza Extremeña (based in Badajoz) creates artisanal, natural beers that offer an exciting alternative to the usual Cruzcampo and Mahou.

Cerex brewery (Cáceres) has been producing artisanal beer since 2013 and was a winner of the silver award for The World's Best Beers in 2021. The brewery uses a traditional method of double fermentation to create its delightfully nutty flavours that are a real celebration of the regional dehesa.

Non-alcoholic

Fresh juices made from local fruits - like oranges, pomegranates and figs - are a refreshing and delicious antidote to the hot Extremaduran summers. Orange juice from Cáceres is famous throughout Spain for its sweetness and is best enjoyed at breakfast (with or without sparkling wine). Look out too for mosto, made from pressed grapes before the wine process. It comes in white and red forms and is a more natural alternative to sugary fizzy drinks.

These juices provide not only a refreshing drink but also a taste of Extremadura's agricultural richness.
